Events Schedule Updates

To acknowledge the 50th anniversary the ILCU is planning a number of activities and events for 2008 which will include the following. Please come back to this section to see the various updates and event announcements as this section will be updated on a regular basis.

Youth Video Competition - to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of credit unions, credit unions are teaming up with SpunOut.ie, a leading national youth organisation, to launch a video clip competition titled "What I love about my place".

The competition will be launched with full competition details, including competition rules, on Thursday 25th September 2008.

Credit Union Community Chest - The Credit Union Community Chest will be run on an all-island basis. Applications will be invited from organisations or community groups that operate locally on a voluntary, not-for-profit basis. Projects eligible for consideration will be chosen on a provincial basis providing a grant in each of the 4 provinces with an additional grant for Dublin. An overall winner from one of these regional winners will be chosen to receive an additional grant.

We are launching this exciting initiative with all additional details on International Credit Union Day, Thursday, 16th October 2008 in Dublin.

The Nora Herlihy Memorial Lecture - A lecture in association with the Irish Times, around the topic of the provision of access to appropriate credit, the provision of social finance and micro finance and the role of the credit unions in Ireland with Bob Geldof as a keynote speaker was held with great success on May 22nd 2008 in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin. George Hook, presenter with Newstalk 106, was an excellent compere for the evening.

Plaques - A commemorative plaque was erected on Donore Credit Union Limited celebrating Ireland's oldest established credit union on the 15th May 2008.

A commemorative plaque will also be erected and on the Ballydesmond sub-office of Rathmore and District Credit Union Limited. Ballydesmond is the birth place of Nora Herlihy, a pioneer of the credit union movement and is home to the Nora Herlihy Heritage Centre. The unveiling ceremony will be held on the 13th September 2008 with many other celebratory events being held that weekend. Stamps - Special commemorative stamps were produced for credit unions usage in Northern Ireland and will be in use for all of 2008. Credit union members in Northern Ireland can purchase these stamps in participating credit unions.

In the Republic of Ireland An Post has launched a commemorative stamp that has been available for sale through post offices from the 24th April 2008. This stamp will be available to purchase at local post offices until the end of 2008.
