Accessibility Statement

Our Commitment to Accessibility

The Irish League of Credit Unions is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people of all abilities.   We pledge to continue improving our user experience for everyone and applying the relevant accessibility standards in accordance with the European Union (Accessibility Requirements of Products and Services) Regulations 2023.

This accessibility statement applies to [www.ILCU.ie].

* It does not apply to other content or websites published on any of its subdomains. These websites and their content will have their own specific accessibility statement.

This website is designed to comply with the technical standard for websites and mobile apps, EN 301 549 V3.2.1 and level ‘AA’ of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.

Compliance Status

This website is 96% compliant with the technical standard EN 301 549 V3.2.1 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 level AA.

ILCU is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone and adhering to the required accessibility standards.

Non-Accessible Content

The content listed below is not yet fully accessible, for the reasons given.

Heading structure in news articles (WCAG 2.2, 1.3.1 Info and Relationships)

Some news articles use bold text where a heading would better convey the structure of the page to assistive technology. This has been addressed at template level: the news article component now supports proper heading levels (H1, H2, etc.), and new and updated news content will use this structure going forward.

Image descriptions in news articles (WCAG 2.2, 1.1.1 Non-text Content)

Some images within news articles do not yet have descriptive alternative text (the image file name is used instead). Descriptive alt text is now being added to images in news content going forward.

We are working to bring existing published content into line with these improvements over time.

Preparation of This Accessibility Statement

This statement is based on a combination of manual and automated accessibility testing carried out by Vially, using multiple platforms:

  • Windows (JAWS, NVDA)

  • Mac (VoiceOver)

  • iOS (VoiceOver) and Android (TalkBack) and their native accessibility tools

A detailed issue log was created to measure the website against the WCAG 2.2 AA standard. Issues identified were provided to the development team, who resolved and retested them against the same standard.

Of the 56 issues identified during testing, 54 have been resolved and confirmed through retesting, including all issues rated Critical or High. The 2 remaining issues are rated Medium and Low and are described in the ‘Non-accessible content’ section above.

  • HTML

  • WAI-ARIA

  • CSS

  • JavaScript

Accessible Content

Skip to content:

A skip to content link has been implemented on every page that has a navigation menu, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repeated navigation.

Keyboard navigation:

Expandable menus and accordions (for example ‘Advocacy’ and ‘Brand’) can be opened and closed using a keyboard and clearly indicate to assistive technology whether they are currently expanded or collapsed.

Focus management:

Focus is kept within open search boxes, filter pop-outs and navigation menus until the user closes them and moves to a logical position after actions such as approving a submission or moving between pages of a listing.

Forms:

Required fields are marked both visually and programmatically. Form outcomes, such as a successful password reset, are announced to assistive technology. Where a session is due to time out, the user is warned and given the option to extend it.

Colour contrast:

Contrast has been improved for search icons, placeholder text, filter and checkbox borders, and button text across the site, in line with WCAG 2.2 AA requirements.

Screen reader labelling:

Cards and listings (news, events, search results and watch-back content) expose their full visible text to screen readers, and interactive controls such as view toggles use appropriate roles.

Page titles:

Each page has a clear, descriptive title.

Mobile:

The mobile chatbot button has been repositioned so that it no longer obstructs navigation controls or on-screen text.
